Kanaskie's Corner - Ronald J. Kanaskie, President, PWCA

Let me take this opportunity through this column to share with you some of the special projects of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Coaches Association.

The PWCA is a service organization devoted to the betterment of scholastic wrestling in this fine state. With this thought in mind, our organization is striving to recognize some special people of Pennsylvania Wrestling.

First of all, we would like to remind each coach of our Pennsylvania All-American Wrestling Team. For the past three years the PWCA has solicited nominations for consideration of academic prowess while participating in wrestling. Each coach is encouraged to nominate any varsity wrestler who has a GPA of 3.0 or higher and has won 60% of his varsity matches. An official form is available from each PWCA district president. The application needs to be completed and be accompanied by an official transcript from your respective guidance department. Last year the PWCA recognized over 150 student-athletes. Each recipient receives a handsome award for himself and his school.

The second project that is in its first year is to honor all wrestlers that attain 100 career wins. Upon that "feat", the PWCA will present a lapel pin signifying this great wrestling accomplishment.

Also, the PWCA will present similar lapel pins to coaches that reach coaching plateaus of 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 career wins. Each district president of the PWCA has been empowered to coordinate this award in his respective district.

And finally, the PWCA is in the process of organizing a wing of the organization to honor and recognize retired coaches. Plans are still being made at this time, but ideas include: receptions at the state meet, recognition at district and regional meets, golf tournaments and picnics may also be included.

In conclusion, we need the coaches across the state to work with their PWCA officer to help honor these special people. We look forward to the growth of each of these programs over the next few years. And, when that happens our sport will grow in stature as well.

My best wishes for a Happy and Safe Holiday Season!
