PA Wrestlers Go Three
for Three at NWCA All-Star Classic
Each of the three Pennsylvania wrestlers selected to compete in the 42nd Annual
NWCA All-Star Classic came away with a victory. At 141 lbs., #2 ranked
Charles Griffin (Reading/Hofstra) was down 4-1 early in the match but scored
eight consecutive points to defeat #3 ranked Nathan Morgan of Oklahoma State
9-4. Griffin won six of seven matches at last year's NCAA Championships
finishing 3rd. At 174 lbs. Keith Gavin (Lackawana Trail/Pittsburgh) is
currently ranked #1 after finishing the 2007 season with a second place finish
at the NCAA Championships. Gavin won and 8-4 decision over #2 Matt Stolpinski
of Navy. At 197 lbs. three time All-American Phil Davis (Harrisburg/Penn
State) won a 6-3 decision over #3 Mike Tamillow of Northwestern.
Three time All-American and 2007 NCAA runner up, Coleman Scott
(Waynesburg/Oklahoma State), was selected to compete but was unable to do so
after sustaining a knee injury a week earlier at the
Central Missouri Open. Since the All-Star Classic is an exhibition
event, the wins do not count on the wrestler’s season records.
The exhibition event was held at the University of Oregon which announced
earlier this year that it will cut the wrestling program at the end of the
season in favor of adding baseball and competitive cheerleading. The NWCA
selected the site with the hope of showing the University of Oregon the high
level of support for wrestling in Oregon. During the final bout of the event,
many of the 4380 fans present chanted “Save Oregon wrestling!”.
