NHSCA NATIONAL OPEN PRE-SEASON WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIPS AGAIN SET THE STANDARD

EASTON, PA. – The National High School Coaches Association’s National Open Pre-Season Wrestling Championships were held at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum in Winston Salem, N.C., on November 13-14, 2004. And once again the nation’s best were on stage to display their talents as they prepare to enter varsity seasons across the country. This year 25 different states were represented, giving the NHSCA Pre-Season Open a more diverse competitive field than any other preseason tournament in the country.

“You really have to give the credit to these state contingents that come from all across America and make this a premier event,” said NHSCA assistant director Joe Boardwine. “Wrestlers at this tournament, regardless of division, know that they are getting to compete with outstanding wrestlers that they most likely would not have the opportunity to face anywhere else.”

This year’s list of states participating included regulars the likes of North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, New York, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Tennessee and Alabama, but also relative newcomers from Wisconsin, Kansas, Colorado, Washington, California, Idaho, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and more.

Of the 475 wrestlers competing in this year’s event and the many talented champions who were crowned, two wrestlers managed to impress the tournament committee in such a fashion as to be recognized as outstanding wrestlers in their respective division. Middle school competitor Thomas Neidhart of New York won the 103-pound weight class with a pair of falls and two dominating victories. In facing opponents from North Carolina, Florida, Georgia and Virginia, Neidhart demonstrated that he will be a force on the national wrestling scene for years to come. And in the high school division, J.J. Davis of South Carolina received the outstanding wrestler award after surviving five matches in the difficult 160-pound weight class to hoist the individual title. Davis defeated wrestlers from four different states during his championship run: d. Ben Fiacco of Georgia 6-3, d. Dan Rivera of Florida 6-4, d. Josh Summers of California 5-3, d. Ben Oeser of North Carolina 11-1 and d. Jesse Cree of North Carolina 9-4.

The National High School Coaches Association is a not-for-profit 501c3 service organization founded in 1989 to provide support and leadership programs for the nation’s more than one million high school coaches and 10 million high school athletes. The NHSCA selects the National High School Coach and Senior Athlete of the Year in 20 boys’ and girls’ sports, and sponsors 18 national championship events in the sports of baseball, basketball, cross-country, field hockey, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, volleyball, and wrestling.

The NHSCA will conduct the NHSCA National High School Football Coaches Convention on January 13-16 in conjunction with the US Army All-American Bowl. The event is a comprehensive educational, professional development, and competition program that is unequalled in any sport. Televised by NBC Sports, the event will be held in cooperation with the NFL Coaches Association and the US Army.

The 15th annual National High School Seniors Wrestling Championships attracted 804 entries from 48 states to Cleveland, Ohio in April 2004. The NHSCA will conduct the National Sports Festival from June-August in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The festival will feature NHSCA National Open High School Championships in 11 different sports.
